In a podcast held on March 31, 2026, the last day of Fraud Prevention Month, Allister Field interviewed experienced, knowledgeable and a very engaged Toronto Police Service financial crimes detective named David Coffey.
It is revealing for the information shared by Coffey on the rapid acceleration and changing landscape of financial crime against unprepared consumers who are being manipulated by impersonations enabled through AI to make the fraud appear legitimate without close circumspection of the deceit and deception being employed against them to remove them from their money.
What comes across loud and clear is fraud is global in all its evil manifestations and therefore requires countries, including Canada, to seek out international collaboration and cooperation to defeat it. If not, consumers are at risk of losing far more in the foreseeable future. Thankfully action is being taken by countries like Australia and the UK to reduce fraud and save consumers from being wiped out.
Let’s hear what Coffey has to say.
