Put this little book, The Little Book of Fraud, on your summer reading list as it may save you a lot of money. This one (see link below) is from the UK, however the fraud prevention tips are universal in describing different types of fraud and how you can take steps to protect yourself.
Here are excerpts in the book’s foreword from the Metropolitan Police Will Lyne, its Head of Economic & Cybercrime.
The aim of this booklet is simple: to provide clear, accessible information that helps people recognize fraud early, protect themselves and others, and know what to do if something goes wrong.
Fraud is the most common crime in the UK. Every year, millions of people are affected and billions of pounds are lost.
These crimes do not discriminate. They target people of all ages, backgrounds and professions, often exploiting trust, urgency or everyday situations rather than technical weaknesses.
But fraud is so much more than just a financial loss and can lead to massive psychological and emotional impacts on victims.
This booklet has been created to help people understand how fraud works, how criminals operate, and what practical steps can be taken to reduce the risk of becoming a target. It covers a wide range of fraud types, from online shopping and investment fraud to romance fraud, impersonation and financial exploitation, reflecting the realities people face today.
Fraud is not a failure of intelligence or awareness. Criminals invest time, effort and technology into making their approaches convincing. Anyone can be affected, and many people do not realize what is happening until it is too late.
It should be noted that the Metropolitan Police are supporting the UK’s national campaign against fraud. It is entitled STOP! THINK FRAUD. Part of the campaign’s message is to remain vigilant at all times and stop and think before making any rushed and emotional financial transaction.

The Met has launched the ‘Little Book of Fraud’ which provides advice to the public about fraud and how they can help prevent themselves from becoming victims.
The Little Book of Fraud is the latest in a long-running series of crime prevention booklets created by the Met’s Economic & Cybercrime Command to raise awareness of these crime threats. It will also help frontline officers and staff explain fraud to members of the public and provides them with appropriate crime prevention advice.
The update reflects the changing nature of fraud and cybercrime, to make sure our guidance for the public remains current, including sections such as:
· Artificial Intelligence
· Cryptocurrency and how this is used in fraud
· Social engineering and how criminals manipulate people through triggering emotional responses
· Financial exploitation
· Information about the new government campaign tackling fraud (‘Stop! Think Fraud)
As well as a whole host of updates about traditional fraud types and how the public can protect themselves.
The booklet also includes updated signposting to support services such as Report Fraud; the new national reporting site for fraud and cybercrime offences in the UK.
