As described below in this LinkedIn post, mule accounts are set up at the receiving end of illicit fraud attempts to launder money and often if successfully wired or transferred, the money is sent quickly to offshore jurisdictions. This is a telltale sign that it may be a suspicious transaction following the initial scam of an innocent victim.
This is why in the UK, where they make reimbursement of unsuspecting bank victims who have been manipulated to execute an Authorized Push Payment (APP) mandatory, both financial institutions involved in the sending and receiving of a fraudulent money transmission are equally responsible for reimbursing the victim. Banks need to be monitoring their receiving accounts of money transfers too to ensure the account is not a mule account being used illegally for criminal activity.
The list of red flags here points to how a financial institution can use them to monitor accounts and intervene and close them if necessary. Once the money is sent internationally, the chance of recovering it is slim.

💳 Mule Accounts: A Hidden Link in Financial Crime
A mule account is a bank account used by criminals to receive, transfer, or withdraw illicit funds, helping disguise the origin of money obtained through fraud, scams, or other financial crimes.
How it works:
🔹 Criminals recruit individuals with promises of easy money.
🔹 The individual provides or opens a bank account.
🔹 Illicit funds are deposited into the account.
🔹 The money is quickly transferred, withdrawn, or layered through multiple accounts.
🔹 Criminals collect the funds while attempting to hide the money trail.
Key Red Flags:
• Newly opened accounts with unusual transaction activity.
• Rapid movement of funds in and out.
• Multiple cash deposits followed by immediate withdrawals.
• Transfers involving high-risk jurisdictions.
• Unusual account activity inconsistent with the customer’s profile.
Remember: Even if you are unaware of the full scheme, allowing your account to be used for moving someone else’s money can expose you to account freezes, financial losses, and criminal investigation.
Stay alert. Protect your account. Help stop financial crime.
