Fraudsters are opportunistic and relentless

Time waits for no one. In financial crime, the bad guys are well attuned to this saying
when it comes to seizing any opportunity to exploit a vulnerable consumer and/or weak
AML framework which is not taking all the necessary steps and precautions to avoid
fraud.

This is why periodic reviews of your AML/KYC framework is crucial since fraud and the
customers you are responsible for evolve. Simply put, if you sit still, you fall behind.

Financial institutions are certainly aware of how fraud has changed with the use of AI to
accelerate potential threats to their framework, but they also need to be cognizant of
how customers’ risk profiles change. For example, life events like a marriage break up or
retirement, planned or otherwise, can mean wealth management considerations require
review and adjustments.

These periodic reviews are an excellent time to look at your metrics to see where you are
at in stopping and preventing frauds from being successfully carried out against your
institution and customers.

**Periodic Review (PRCR) in AML/KYC:
Keeping Customer Risk Profiles Current 🔍🛡️**

Periodic Review is an essential part of the AML/KYC framework. It helps financial institutions ensure that customer information, KYC documents, risk ratings, transaction activity, beneficial ownership, PEP/sanctions screening, and Source of Funds/Source of Wealth information remain accurate and up to date.

A customer’s risk profile can change over time. Significant changes in transaction volume, business activity, ownership, geographic exposure, adverse media, or PEP/sanctions status can trigger a review before the scheduled periodic review date.

The key is not simply to **“refresh KYC”**, but to understand **what has changed, why it changed, and whether the customer’s current activity is consistent with their profile and expected behavior.**

📌 **Remember:**
Periodic Review is more than a compliance requirement—it is an opportunity to identify changing risks, strengthen customer due diligence, and support effective financial crime prevention.
