A transaction is more than a number

One transaction can be so consequential to a consumer and may endure a lifetime without
anything in place (i.e., alert) to detect and prevent a fraudulent attack from being carried
out. A transaction is clearly more than a number and needs to be scrutinized to determine
if it merits further questions and investigation if necessary. Financial institutions have the
professional expertise to bring judgment and experience to bear on a transaction which is
unusual based on the customer’s normal transactional behavior.

You need to look under the hood to see what is happening. Things may be fine, but you will
never know if you do not look and ignore it altogether.

Day 6 | Learning AML — Transaction Monitoring

A transaction is just a number… until you understand the story behind it.

Transaction Monitoring helps turn thousands of daily transactions into meaningful signals by highlighting unusual patterns, changes in behavior, frequency, volume, geography, and other risk indicators.

But here’s where the real work begins: an alert is a question, not a conclusion.

The AML Analyst connects the dots—understands the customer, reviews the activity, challenges the rationale, gathers supporting information, documents the analysis, and decides whether the alert can be closed or requires escalation.

🔄 Alert → Context → Analysis → Judgment → Action

Technology can generate the alert.
Professional judgment gives it meaning.

That’s what makes Transaction Monitoring more than just a system—it’s a critical part of the fight against financial crime.

What matters more in AML: detecting the unusual, or understanding why it happened?
